In TripAdvisor’s survey of the dirtiest hotel in America, this hotel “won” three times. There’s been a lot of murders here…
New York’s dirtiest hotel is located right in the “rich” area
The Carter Hotel – the dirtiest hotel in the free country – is located in the lavish Manhattan area, near Times Square. This is a great location, but the hotel does not make a profit from this prime location but goes downhill.
The Carter Hotel passed through many owners. By 2014, it was seriously degraded, gradually gaining the title of dirtiest hotel in New York City. The same year, the hotel closed.
The story of the dirtiest hotel in New York
The Carter Hotel is a cheap, mediocre hotel. However, it is not only the clutter and dirt that attracts people’s attention but also the place where crime and death take place. Reportedly, 9 people died at the hotel, and the 9th death is still a mystery.
The hotel’s fall into filth began in 1980. In 1983, it was publicly mentioned for its “lowest compliance rate in fixing health and safety violations”. The city even sued the hotel in 1983 and 1984 for failure to make amends and Carter was subsequently fined. In 1984, the city began using the hotel as a shelter for the homeless, and it also became a gathering place for many teenagers and children.
The hotel tried to “escape” the group of homeless family people to attract tourists, reducing their number from 300 to 61, and by 1988 they were all out of the hotel. However, the “afterglow” from those hundreds of homeless people left remained with the hotel, making it even more scandalous.
In the New York Times, this event is still archived: “Hotel near Times Square closed to homeless people to serve tourists” (December 29, 1985) and “Court allows city New York takes over the welfare hotel” (1990).
However, the hotel does not seem to have improved much in terms of its sanitary deterioration. In the past time, the scandal, dirty in the hotel was strongly condemned by tourists and recognized by the media. The proof is that the hotel has been voted the dirtiest hotel in America 3 times. The Observer in 2014 also declared it “undeniably, obviously, the worst hotel in New York City”.
Former guests recounted that the bed sheets at the hotel were dirty, the bathroom tiles were dull, and there was no toilet paper. – as well as having to get your own toilet paper. Low-budget guests who want to find a cheap place to rest in NYC that expect nothing but basic sanitation can temporarily accept this place; but it is suggested that the condition of the hotel may only appeal to the homeless.
Those particularly cash-strapped travelers, who want to see first-hand the quasi-mythical site’s lack of quality or who want to experience a real old New York experience, the Carter Hotel is the place to be, described is “time seems to stand still”.
It’s unclear how filthy the hotel will be if it reopens. Although it has been shut down, the hotel still appears on booking sites such as Kayak.com and Hotels-Innewyork.com.
